Clean Hands, Clean Routine: Hygiene Basics for Topical Personal Care
Topical personal care often involves direct contact between your hands, the package, and your skin. A clean routine does not need to be complicated, but it should be deliberate.
Wash and dry your hands first
Start with clean hands before opening or applying a product. Dry hands are especially helpful when handling powders or packaging that should stay dry.
Keep the opening and applicator clean
Avoid touching the inside of a container more than necessary. If the product comes with an applicator, use and clean it according to the directions rather than substituting an unclean household item.
Do not share personal applicators
Sharing products that directly contact skin can transfer microorganisms. The FDA specifically advises against sharing cosmetics such as makeup; the same clean-handling principle is useful for personal topical routines.
Close the package after use
Caps, seals, and closures help protect the contents. Do not leave an open product sitting in a damp bathroom or another place where it can pick up moisture and debris.
Keep the routine simple
Layering several products on the same sensitive area can make irritation more likely and make it harder to know which product caused a reaction. Follow the directions for the product you are using instead of improvising a complex combination.
Wash off when the directions tell you to
If the instructions include a wash-off step, complete it thoroughly. Do not assume leaving a product on longer will improve the intended personal-care use.
