Aloe Vera for External Skin Care: Safety Basics
Aloe vera is commonly used in skin-care products because of its cooling texture and moisturizing feel. When used on sensitive external skin, however, simple precautions matter.
Check the ingredient list
Choose products with clear ingredient labels and avoid applying unfamiliar formulations to broken, irritated or infected skin. Fragrance, alcohol and other additives may cause irritation for some people.
Patch test first
If the product directions allow it, test a small amount on a limited area before wider use. Stop if you notice burning, swelling, rash or persistent redness.
External use only
Unless a product is specifically labeled otherwise, keep topical skin-care products away from internal tissue and eyes. Wash the area if discomfort develops.
When to ask a professional
If you have an ongoing skin condition, repeated irritation or a history of allergies, a healthcare professional can help you choose an appropriate product.
